Netflix will launch a new interface for TV streaming

Netflix hasn’t had a major update to the way the company presents your latest binge in quite some time. The last refresh was when the company implemented autoplay previews of content as you scrolled through the menu a few years ago. However, the company announced yesterday that they will soon be rolling out updates to their TV interface that will come with a new UI. The details on when the update will roll out are pretty vague, but in their blog post, Director of Innovation Stephen Garcia did share the GIF below which reveals what it looks like.

He also shared his reasoning: the company wanted to streamline their menus and make it dead simple for people to get to their streaming content as quickly as possible.

The new TV interface was designed to make the Netflix experience simpler and more intuitive in a few different ways. First, it is now easier to search and view new content added to the service. It is also far simpler to start browsing with either a series or movie; our research has shown us that while a member generally isn’t sure what exact title they want to watch, they have a pretty good sense of whether they are in the mood for a quick series episode or a longer movie experience. We’ve also made it easier to access titles you’ve saved for later viewing in My List. In our testing of this new interface, we saw that that this simpler design helped members find something great to watch.

The new UI reminds me of the FireTV interface or even common Android apps. The menu for your Search, My List, Show, and Movies are all within a slide-out panel on the far left of the screen. This offers a quick access to all those landing spots without having to take up permanent real estate on your TV. It also keeps these options stagnant in one spot on the home screen, which will eliminate the need to have to scroll back through the pages to get to what you are searching for.

The update may start with certain devices immediately, but Netflix plans to expand slowly to all their supported platforms “over the next few months.” What do you think? Are you a fan of the new look? Personally, I’ve thought this move was needed for quite some time and will gladly wait for this update.
