Android P Developer Preview is here!

Android Pumpkin Pie? Android Pecan Pie? Android Peach? Yes, unfortunately, we don’t know what Android P will be called but we do know that today Google has made the preview of the next iteration of Android available to developers. Here is what you need to know.

Display cutout (notch) support

The cutout is here to stay and Google is offering support to OEM’s that decide to include it in their design. Android P will allow apps to take full advantage of the notch, with Google “managing status bar height to separate your content from the cutout.” In other words, this should make for a better experience as OEM’s start introducing it into the designs of their devices.

Refreshed Notifications

In Android P we see that Google will be focusing on making your notifications more visible and functional. Personally, I love what I am seeing thus far with notifications on Android and am excited to see how it does after official roll out. One of the stand out features here is how with Android P notifications will show conversations, photos, stickers, and smart replies, like Google’s new Reply app.

No Mic or Camera for Background Apps

With Android P, Google is now restricting apps running in the background to access your microphone or camera. This will prevent malicious apps from accessing these components while running in the background.

These are just a few of the basic changes coming to Android P. As we get more information we will continue to update this article. Also, being that this is a developer preview Android P is in beta and is not meant for regular everyday usage. Currently, it is available for download on the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. Since this is not an official build that means there will be issues and we also do not recommend that you download it for your everyday device.

If you do have a secondary device or are just a diehard fan, you can download it below:
