Spotify Launches On Android TV, New Android Wear App Coming
Amidst all of yesterday’s Google I/O madness, Spotify announced a new official application for the Android TV platform. The app, like all other Spotify apps, gives you access to all your favorite tunes right from the TV. The app is of course compatible with all currently available Android TV hardware, including both boxes and TVs. The app does for some reason show a gamepad requirement in its Play Store listing, but in testing we found that it works just fine with the standard remote. The app will work with both free and premium Spotify users.
If you’re using the current version of Android TV (5.0 and above) you can download Spotify from the Google Play Store on your TV and instantly begin browsing your favorite albums, songs, and playlists using your Android TV remote, or by using the Spotify mobile app to control your music via Spotify Connect. And, while you’re playing the tunes, you can check out the beautiful album artwork right there on the big screen!
In related news, Google also gave us a sneak peek at a new Spotify app for Android Wear. While they didn’t provide too many details, we can see from the presentation that this new app will include a new UI better suited for round displays. Thanks to some new changes in the OS, you’ll also be able to launch the app directly from your watchface and it looks like you’ll also have the ability to download your playlists to the watch for streaming over Bluetooth (something previously limited only to Google Play Music). For now we don’t know anything else about this new app, but we’ll probably see it officially launch around the same time as Android Wear 2.0.
