iPhone 7 Might Get Dual-Camera System For Better Photos

Apple will likely reveal and release the iPhone 7 in September 2016 following their current trend of the annual release. There are already rumours and speculations that the new iPhone will not come with a headphone jack but a new rumour has recently risen about the phone’s camera, and whether it will include a newly designed Dual-Camera system.

Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities recently said: “The iPhone 7 Plus will come with a dual-lens system option and leverage LinX’s technology.”

Apple bought LinX back in April 2015. For those who don’t know, LinX is a camera module maker working on multi-lens systems for smartphones and other camera devices.

Ming-Chi Kuo has a good track record when it comes to predictions for new Apple products, but Apple has used the same camera module in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and then used a better version of this module in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but it was still the same module. The only camera module difference between the iPhone Plus and its 4.7-inch variant is that the larger models feature optical image stabilization. This is what makes some people doubt the fact that Ming-Chi’s prediction will be correct.

Keeping the dual-camera system specifically for the iPhone 7 Plus would be a change from Apple’s current strategy when it comes to the camera module. There could be supply chain constraints pushing Apple to reserve this new module to some models only.

You may be wondering why Apple would put two cameras at the back of an iPhone. There are many potential cases where this will be useful. LinX has built a hardware and software solution to make two or more lenses work together seamlessly. For example, a dual-lens or multi-lens system could improve the background defocus and re-create depth of field. Background defocus is one of the reasons why people buy and use low aperture DSLR lenses. Two cameras could also improve low-light performance, colour fidelity and HDR performance. This module could also allow you to focus on the foreground of the background after capturing a photo, like with a Lytro camera.

Another option Apple could choose would be to let the user switch between one lens and the other for two different zoom options. For example, the second lens could let the user capture full-size images with 3x magnification. Having an optical zoom would be a good alternative to third-party lenses like the Olloclip lenses you can buy separately for an iPhone.

It’s unclear whether a dual-camera system would slim down camera design because Apple is always looking for ways to make the iPhone slimmer, so this is important. The company is thinking about curved photosensors, which looks like a better way to make the camera slimmer.

Back in December 2015, CBS’ 60 Minutes unveiled that 800 people are working on the new iPhone’s camera at Apple. It’s an important focus for Apple as millions of people are relying on the company’s iPhones to shoot photos and videos in their daily life. And switching to a dual-lens system would open a wide array of new creative features for the users to explore and utilise.

Despite all of these advantages, the dual-camera might make the new iPhone more expensive because it uses more parts, and gives new and exciting features for existing or more users to use.
