The Samsung Z1 Is Samsung’s First Tizen Smartphone

Samsung has been promising the public a high-end Tizen smartphone for about a year now and now it looks like we actually have it…sort of. Today Samsung made official what they call the Samsung Z1, the companies first actual smartphone running their Tizen OS. While it is great to finally see a Tizen smartphone in the flesh, it is not the high-end Tizen phone that Samsung has been promising us for about a year now.

Instead the Samsung Z1 is a low-end Tizen smartphone. Its specs are as follows:

  • 4-inch WVGA display
  • Dual-core 1.2GHz processor
  • 768MB of RAM
  • 4GB of storage
  • 3.1 MP camera
  • 1500mAh battery
  • 3G service
  • Tizen 2.3 OS

The device will go on sale today in India for 5700 rupees, about $90. It will be offered in three different colors, red, white, and of course, black.

There is virtually no chance that we will ever see the Tizen Z1 for sale in the US, Samsung seems to be targeting the Indian market specifically with the Z1. This leads us to believe that Samsung is attempting to compete directly with Google’s Android One initiative. Both companies now offer low-cost smartphones in India that are designed to still be very capable despite their lower specs.
