ASUS ZenFone 2 Announced – The First Phone With 4GB Of RAM That Starts At Just $199 Off-Contract

ASUS has been pretty quiet for a while with their smartphones and tablets, but today at CES 2015 they took a couple big chances in the Android arena that look like they might pay off. The first of the major Android announcements was the ASUS ZenFone 2. This is the first phone with 4GB of RAM, and the rest of the phone is no disappointment either.

The phone’s design is a mashup of design from HTC and LG with a brushed aluminum body along with rear-mounted buttons on the back. The display on the front is a 5.5″ inch 1080p panel with a 72% screen to body ratio. What does that mean? It means there are practically no bezels on this phone. Powering the phone is a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor clocked at 2.3GHz. The battery inside comes in at 3,000 mAh and the phone comes with fast-charging technology. We’re also looking at a 13MP camera around back and a 5MP camera on the front.

Software wise we’re looking at Android 5.0 Lollipop with ASUS’s own skin on top. The skin is an updated version of ZenUI, and it’s not all that bad. Previous versions were pretty decent, so let’s hope things are just as good if not better now.

Now for the price. Just looking at the specs, you might expect this to sell for upwards of $500 at least. However that’s not the case. Instead ASUS is starting off-contract pricing of the ZenPhone 2 at just $199 off-contract. Granted, that base model doesn’t include 4GB of RAM, instead half of that. Either way, it’s shaping up to be a good option. Launch is planned for March, so let’s wait and see what happens with this phone.
