So… Pokkén Tournament Is A Video Game

Last week, The Pokémon Company teased a “shocking” announcement would be coming today. Since the wording was so specific, many people (including myself) assumed it would be more information about the upcoming Pikachu detective project in the works, but it turns out to be even more shocking that that.

In collaboration with Bandai Namco comes Pokkén Tournament, a fighting game spinoff of the Pokémon franchise. Considering the naming and the team behind it, Pokkén Tournament will likely play similar to the Tekken series’ 3D fighting style. The early trailer released has Lucario and Machamp squaring off in a field, both showing off different attack styles.

This is mostly just an announcement, but there is some other information we do know. For starters, expect a Western release to take a while, as Pokkén Tournament is slated to hit Japanese arcades in 2015. It will probably make its way to console and to the Western market over time. Frankly, I’d be surprised if it didn’t considering the pull that Pokémon has. As for the roster, Pokkén Tournament will likely include several Fighting-types from all generations but being isolated to just Fighting-types is purely speculation.

Really, though, this is pretty rad and I can see this going places with Bandai Namco behind it. Personally, I’ve never really been into fighting games, but stuff like this and the upcoming Persona 4 Arena Ultimax are starting to pique my interest. After all, Hyrule Warriors was enough for me to want to give Dynasty Warriors a shot.
