Google Shutting Down Orkut This September – Focusing On Google+, YouTube, Blogger
Google has had a bumpy road in the social network space. They’ve had failures such as Google Wave and Google Buzz, both of which never caught on and were quickly canceled. Another example would be Orkut. Orkut was created in 2004 by a Google employee and never quite caught on in the US. It became popular in other area of the world however gathering well over 100 million users concentrated in countries like Brazil and India. Interestingly up until today it’s still been in beta. However 10 years later Google has decided to close the doors. Current Orkut users will have until September 30th to bring themselves to Google+ or any other social network. The Android and iOS apps have been removed from their respective stores.
“It’s been a great 10 years, and we apologize to those still actively using the service. We hope people will find other online communities to spark more conversations and build even more connections for the next decade and beyond.”
