Sprint Planning To Make Their Handsets SIM Unlockable Starting In February 2015
In the US, carriers have made a mess of a lot of things. One of those is unlocking phone. If you buy a phone from the carrier, you are pretty much stuck using that phone only on that carrier. Starting in 2015 though, Sprint wants to change that.
The company is working now with manufacturers to ensure that their phones will be unlockable for use on other networks. Sprint states that “all devices developed and launched on or after February 11th, 2015 are capable of being unlocked domestically.”
Most phones on Sprint and even Verizon are actually capable of using GSM networks but are locked up by the carriers to ensure that users can’t do that. Sprint’s changes would allows customers to do more with their device including taking it to another network. It’s worth noting though that device made before February 11th, 2015 won’t necessarily be available for this type of unlocking.
This is definitely a step forward in US carriers being open. Let’s hope it carries on to others like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, but we won’t hold our breath.
