How To Reset A Chromebook

You may have just gotten a Chromebook as a gift, or you may have had one for months or even years. One thing that many people overlook on any device is how to restore it. On a phone or tablet it is almost second nature, but our computers are full of files that we don’t exactly want to get rid of. One of the luxuries of a Chromebook, at least in my opinion, is that you don’t collect as many files. So if you’re Chromebook ever slows down or gets overly cluttered, you can simply reset. The option however, doesn’t immediately present itself to a basic user.

First, you will need to open a tab on your Chromebook. In that tab, type in chrome://settings. Once in that tab, scroll down to the bottom and click “Show Advanced Settings”. After you click on that, you can simply scroll down to the bottom of the page again and find the section labeled “Powerwash”. A prompt will appear stating that you will need to restart your Chromebook. This is when you would think about if you had any important files or accounts on your Chromebook as this will delete everything stored locally on your device. If you don’t have any files simply hit restart. The device will then turn off and restart. Upon boot up you will be greeted with a warning message stating that you are about to wipe your device. Simply accept and the device will  turn off and back on into the reset process. Depending on the number of files/accounts on the device it can take up to a couple minutes to complete.

After the process has finished you will be greeted with the screen you saw when your originally turned on your device. This is a great way to clean up clutter or fix problems with your Chromebook. It also seems to give the device a performance boost (in my experience anyway.) Hope this helps you!
