My Thoughts on the New iPhones!
It’s that time of the year again, that’s right new iPhones. This year was a little different, instead of releasing just one iPhone similar to previous years, Apple decided to release two new iPhones. The first phone is the 5S, an update to the widely popular iPhone 5, this is Apple’s flagship phone. However, what made this year special was the unveiling of a new iPhone, the 5c.
Firstly, I’d like to give my thoughts on the iPhone 5S. When rumours first began about this iPhone last November, I really began to wonder what Apple would do. There was no doubt that the design was going to be the same, but the question remained, what would they do different. The iPhone 4S brought Siri and started the voice control competition. So, what happened this year? Many people may look at the event from this year, and think to themselves, “Apple really didn’t change anything this year.” However, I personally feel that Apple made two major changes with the release of the iPhone 5S. The first one, is the one that most people will notice. It is the new Fingerprint scanner built into the iPhone’s home button, the first of it’s kind on a mobile phone. The scanner won’t use optical technology, but instead an advanced sensor. I feel that this is the beginning of the chain of phones with fingerprint scanners. However, I feel that the second innovation from the iPhone 5S is more powerful. It is the new 64-bit processor on the new Apple A7 processor. No flagship mobile phone has had a 64-bit chip, so I feel this is a major step in the right direction by Apple to move forward in the mobile industry. The new 64-bit processor will make the iPhone capable of running powerful applications and games. I am personally quite excited to see just how fast the new iPhone is.
On the other hand, my thoughts on the iPhone 5c aren’t as great. But, first I’ll go with the things I like about it. I feel that Apple is making a move in the right direction by offering a lower-cost iPhone. I also like the fact that the build on the 5c isn’t completely plastic, but instead a plastic reinforced by a metal frame, making it more durable than the average plastic phone. However, that being said, there are definitely quite a few things that disappointed me with this phone. The first being the price. I was personally hoping the iPhone 5c would be between $300-$400 unlocked and $0 on contract, instead Apple made a bold move and priced the 5c at $549 unlocked and $99 on contract. This takes me to my next point, I feel that Apple overloaded the 5c with features. The 5c definitely gives you a good value for the price, but if Apple was really interested in getting into emerging markets, they would make an iPhone that is substantially less powerful than it’s premium model. Instead, Apple went ahead and made the 5c as powerful as the original iPhone 5 which was a pretty powerful device. Looking forward though, I am optimistic about Apple realizing this mistake and making the iPhone 6c priced significantly lower than this year’s 5c model.
Overall, I feel that this year’s Apple iPhone event showed that Apple has changed and I feel that they are definitely taking a huge step in the right direction, especially in terms of working to expand their market share. As usual, this year’s iPhone’s have pleased me, and I am looking forward to getting to see them in person. Are you? Let me know in the comments!
